Reimagining Trash Bins

Trash is universal. No matter who you are or where you are, you probably experience garbage on a daily basis. That presents a need for an important user experience in a category that’s so often overlooked: The waste bin. We collaborated with the Rubbermaid design team to reimagine the waste disposal experience by designing a new solution for simplicity, ease of use and, frankly, a better-looking trash bin.

From passersby and janitorial staff to refuse rooms and parks, we observed the spaces and experiences where trash plays a role. We found that waste systems lacked the red thread needed for simpler sorting when we toss things in, and easier unloading when disposing of trash.

This new design language we developed for Rubbermaid simplifies the waste process all while making it look great. We simplified sorting with a clear color and labeling system that just makes sense, and designed an easy grouping system for different bin volumes so they can be configured to fit within a variety of spaces. The color and material customization makes for a more appealing fixture, whether it’s tucked in a corner or placed in the middle of the room.

The result? A redesigned waste bin system that makes a dirty job much better.
