WHOOP is a 24/7 digital fitness and health coach that provides actionable sleep, recovery and training insights in real-time. WHOOP came to Aruliden with advanced technology that could better track key fitness metrics to take the guesswork out of training. Since 2013 we've worked with the WHOOP founding team to package this ground-breaking technology into a streamlined wearable, worn 24/7, that's changed how people live and train.

We set out to design the newest generation of WHOOP with a major goal in mind — establishing it as a legitimate tool in the healthcare space. Building on WHOOP’s fitness tracking prowess, we partnered with their engineers to integrate EKG, resculpt the sensors for greater accuracy, and triple the battery life, all while making the device 7% smaller.

Our collaboration with WHOOP spans their entire hardware evolution. Throughout several generations, we sought to improve user experience and technical performance at every chance while maintaining WHOOP’s core DNA — strengthening the product, and our partnership.

The wearable offloads all interaction to the digital app, minimizing device volume and experiential clutter.

A modular design approach unlocks instant customization and allows the sensor to be worn in many ways, not just on the wrist.

The proprietary wireless battery pack creates a seamless charging experience that allows the user to wear WHOOP 24/7 — capturing more accurate data and staying true to WHOOP’s mantra: “ALWAYS ON.”

WHOOP and its founder, Will Ahmed, wanted to explore more than steps or caloric assignment but understand how sleep and recovery can lead to optimized athletic performance. We created a design language, that brought the idea to life.

Our design choice to omit a screen with a user interface from the strap enabled the product to become something subdued, immovable, and unrecognizable as a fitness tracking device.

We worked with WHOOP’s engineers to optimize the design around internal components, while considering the curvature of the wrist and comfort of the sensor.

Bands — Built for Purpose

SportFlex —
New for WHOOP 5.0, we helped develop a silicone band that is more durable and dries quicker than the standard knit band. The overt brand inspired texture incorporates airflow slots.

LeatherLuxe —
Also new for WHOOP 5.0, we designed a tapered leather band that brings a more formal, sophisticated presence to the wearable. We explored many iterations to select the perfect textile and taper profile.

A Universal, Approachable Packaging System

We helped WHOOP spearhead a new packaging system for 5.0 centered around flexibility and reuse. Simplified construction without adhesives allows the packaging to be easily recycled, while SKU specific inserts can be removed after purchase to convert the outer structure into a storage container for WHOOP accessories.

The WHOOP experience across app and hardware enables seamless integration between physical product and digital platforms, providing its community with the opportunity to know what state their bodies are in. By harnessing an advanced data set to make better decisions, users can fine-tune their lifestyle, and improve their overall well-being, leading to a better, healthier, more informed overview of themselves.

WHOOP uses ‘Strain’ to measure and guide an optimal amount of exertion each day based on one’s recovery and training goals.

WHOOP provides a ‘Recovery’ score each day that indicates the user’s readiness to perform, based on sleep quality and the previous day’s ‘Strain.’

WHOOP tracks sleep quality through a variety of advanced metrics aggregated into a proprietary measurement. The accuracy and depth of sleep data differentiates WHOOP from its competitors.

Visual Identity

Our work with WHOOP has spanned industrial design, brand positioning, identity design and development of the user interface. We set out to develop a compelling brand expression that would connect with athletes across every touchpoint of the consumer experience. Collaborating with Martin Oberhauser, the developer behind UI at WHOOP, we created an authoritative visual language that exuded the brand’s elite voice.
